Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes and How to Correct Them – by Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich

This book looks less at the mechanics of personal finance and more at the behavior of the person. It outlines 7 of the most common traits that end up hurting our long-term goals. The authors break down normally complex financial and psychological concepts into easy-to-relate-to stories.

Money: Master the Game – by Tony Robbins

The Self-help guru has taken on the financial world. Find a good chair, because at 664 pages, this is a long read! (I listened to the audio book). In it, Tony Robbins gains access to some of the greatest minds and investors of our day, like only he can, to help the reader understand how the markets work the way they do and what you can do to (possibly) maximize your wealth while (hopefully) minimizing your risk. It is definitely geared towards the U.S. market, but the concepts are transferable to the Canadian investor.

A Wealth of Common Sense, by Ben Carlson

This great book is about Simplicity and Common Sense in investment. Ben Carlson talks about building a portfolio, asset allocation, risk tolerance, and other financial planning topics.

The Essential Retirement Guide, by Frederick Vettesse

This is one of the best retirement planning books I've read. It is logical, well thought out and very well presented with graphs and tables to clearly illustrate complicated retirement planning concepts. The book walks the reader through what their required wealth target should be but doesn't lose sight that we all need to live our lives along the way.

The One Page Financial Plan, by Carl Richard

I think that Carl Richards hits on some really great points and I'm glad that he took the time to simplify the financial planning process for the masses. Richards starts with the fundamental question of what is important in your life and how to figure that out, which is a similar process that we follow when putting together a financial plan for our clients.
